If you want to persuade an atheist to open up and listen to your Christian beliefs, you need to arm yourself with evidence, examples and a good testimony of what you led you to the Christian faith to begin with. Atheists often remain steadfast in the denial of a supreme being because they expect concrete proof that God truly exists. While no one can gather that type of evidence, you can use other resources to help convince them of your faith.

- Focus on the emotional conversion to Christianity. Atheists tend to focus on the rational things of life, things they can test and touch. You cannot test and touch emotion, but you certainly can feel it. Try relating to the atheist on this emotional level by recounting the story of how you found Christ and why you decided to turn to Christianity. Retelling your story of the emotional journey you took to get to the level of faith you have now may peak the interest of an atheist.
- Ask the atheist what they believe caused the universe to be formed. Explain that a universe so complex and vast simply cannot come from nothing; a supreme being, often called in arguments an intelligent designer, must exist. Acknowledge that the existence of a supreme being does not necessarily negate the existence of scientifically proven data, such as evolution. In fact, science and religion can work hand in hand if one is willing to listen. An atheist need not give up his knowledge of science and the origins of the Earth to accept that a supreme being exists.
- Raise the question of morality with the atheist. Inquire of him where he feels he got his moral values and sense of right and wrong. Argue that morals are something many are innately born with. While our Creator has given us free will, he has also provided us with a sense of right and wrong and the choice to do right or wrong. Most of us experience that inner feeling of guilt and shame we get when we do something wrong. Acknowledge that the society and type of home our parents choose to raise us in greatly affects our moral values as functioning adults but it is difficult to deny the innate awareness we have of what is right and what is wrong.
- Present the stories of the Bible to the atheist and show Jesus Christ’s words in the New Testament of forgiveness and love. An atheist may think of the Bible as little more than a storybook but show the atheist your strong belief and faith in the Bible as the true word of God anyway. Persuade the atheist to come with you to a non-denominational church service that is open and informative so he can learn more.
Tips & Warnings
- Don’t present the evidence for your case in a threatening or accusatory way. Telling an atheist he may reside in hell one day for rejecting Christianity won’t persuade him at all to your beliefs. In fact, he may reject them completely. Explain your faith in a gentle and non-threatening way that shows him you truly care about his soul and not that you’re passing judgment or just trying to win an argument.

Instruction #1, wrong. We (atheists) don’t think your personal emotional “journeys” indicate a logical, intelligent reason to believe in mythical creatures.
Instruction #2, wrong. It doesn’t matter what an individual atheist believes about the creation of the universe or anything else for that matter. There are many religious ideas and scientific thoughts on the subject. The fact that one idea is wrong does not make another idea correct.
Instruction #3, wrong. Morals are a byproduct of society as a whole and not a result of an individual religion. When Europeans discovered the New World they encountered natives living in a highly moral system even though they had not been exposed to Christianity. The Europeans proceeded to murder the natives. The Bhudists and Tao are extremely moral cultures yet don’t necessarily believe in a supreme being. If its harmful, its bad. If its not harmful, its good. Duh.
Instruction #4, wrong. Never, ever, ever quote the Bible to an atheist. If you quote the Bible to me I will quote “Charlie Brown” to you. The Bible is a collection of legends handed down verbally over generations by illiterates who lived in tents and slept with goats. In the 4th century Constantine had the so-called religious scholars take some of these legends, throw them together to form the Bible. Its nothing more than a poorly composed novel. If you’ve read the Bible cover to cover objectively rather than select verses designed to strengthen your faith, atheism would seem the better option.
Also, don’t tell me I’m going to Hell, It doesn’t exist. And no, I won’t find out in the end. Don’t tell me you’ll pray for me, it makes you look stupid.

So wthoiut commandants or Jesus people are just evil. But if “god” made us, why would he make our true nature evil?
So, micheal, since you have said morals are the byproducts of society on comment #3, and every nation, people, and culture have different regulations, ideas and thought,what is good? what is right? or in your case is everything good and everything right? for each society has different standards? Is killing truly wrong or does it depend on the situation? and as you have said “The fact that one idea is wrong does not make another idea correct.” so this applies to your comment to the fact that our idea is wrong does not make atheism correct. And you have also said if it is harmful it is bad- well to whom, to me? to you? to society? My dear child, you must understand if that is the truly the thought of atheism; we should have no more war, school, development, education and science, for they have all shown risk of our demise and harm to society. So in the sense only using what you have said just now, you are living a life with no true goal, satisfaction, and a belief that is in fact only set by what your society have told you forming a religion from within while saying you believe in nothing and have no religion and while anger and discontent grows in your heart towards the followers of Christ who have found joy in Him who lives eternally.
