I take flack about my stance against belief. The argument against me is that a Venn Diagram of knowledge would allegedly be part truth and part belief. Somewhere between truth and belief is knowledge, and I’m supposed to just accept this as fact cuz there’s a Venn Diagram. See!? It’s plain as day. Don’t question it.
I wrestle against that presumption, because it lends some kind of credence to belief. That we must accept all beliefs as possible so that we do not narrow our field of vision. Allowing for perhaps the most outrageous of possibilities can lead to great innovations in science. “Thinking outside the box” one might say.
There’s thinking outside the box and then there’s just not using a box cuz your ancestors thought boxes were a sign of The Devil. #EpicFail Faith is the acceptance of beliefs without validation or proof. Just accepting something as a given despite logic or reason. This turns logic & reason into The Devil.
Dr. Craig Ventner has synthesized living tissue. Not only is Earth no longer the center of the universe. Not only is God not sitting on a throne up in the clouds somewhere. We now have irrefutable proof that reality did not need a god to create life.
What more proof must we have to be able to say there is no god, without sounding as insane as someone who would croak “if your faith is big enough, facts don’t count.”
Faith and belief do not count. Facts matter. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but if that opinion cannot be backed up by facts, it’s not any good, no matter how hard one believes otherwise.
Well, I would suggest that anyone is free to entertain any opinion they please, but to say that they’re entitled to it seems, to me, to imply that some work went into reaching it, and that it’s therefore deserved.
